| I commented to a friend one day that I pass Dunkin’ Donuts and the Super Gym in Jackson, NJ on my way home every day. But which did I choose? Even though I am grossly overweight and so immobile that I actually considered buying a motor sized wheelchair, I chose Dunkin’ Donuts. My friend suggested I join the gym!
It took me a month of sitting in the parking lot watching the clientele and munching more donuts before I decided to enter the door. I signed up for a year and paid in advance because I know how easy it would be for me to NOT go. That was October. Before I knew it, November and December went by. I bought new sneakers, suitable gym clothes, and earplugs, but really “too busy” to get to the gym.
Finally, after being snowed in for four days with my very health-concious cousins (who are horrified by the shape I am in and are praying for me every night), I made the BIG COMMITMENT. On January 3rd I signed up for three months of personal training, five times a week. Candice Belfer, the President of Home Training Group, was very encouraging and inspiring with her own personal history. Again, I paid in advance so that I could NOT quit!
I met my trainer, Scott, the next day and the rest is an incredible story. This young man was obviously a dedicated professional from day one. He put me through movements and routines that were challenging but never hurt or left me feeling sore. In fact the immediate result was of confidence and purpose. Each session was different from the last, so it was never boring. Everything was geared toward strengthening long-unused muscles and gaining flexability.
After one week I couldn’t believe I climbed a set of stairs, tied my own shoes, and walked further than before, all without huffing and puffing. Along with my increase in mobility, I’m slowly steadily losing weight under Scott’s diligent surveillance. He and the rest of the staff (and othe customers) all seem to be part of a wonderful conspiracy to improve the quality of life.
I used to be very active, even athletic. Age and years of self-indulgence left me in what I thought was a hopeless condition. Scott said it’s never too late and the time is to start now. He was right! I didn’t expect to feel this good so soon. I’m getting my life back!
