After 30+ years of being overweight, obese and then morbidly obese, Tammy St. Clair chose to have LapBand surgery five years ago as her avenue to attain her own safe, effective and permanent weight loss. As most weight loss surgery doctors will tell you - having weight loss surgery is simply “a tool” - and weight loss is never guaranteed; nor is maintaining the weight loss you’ve achieved. Realistically, weight loss rarely occurs, and stays off, without come sort of challenge. Incredibly, to her anyway, Tammy‘s lost 110lb's with the LapBand procedure and she’s maintained that loss over the last five years. Tammy went from weighing 287 pounds, wearing a size 26/28W to reaching a realistic range of 177-183 pounds and is now wearing a size 10 pant, a size 14 dress (darn ribcage!!) and even some medium Tee’s from stores she never would have ventured into.
Tammy St. Clair understands the challenges that come along with significant weight loss and also understands, and celebrates, the victories that come with it as well. Before she lost her weight, Tammy had non-insulin dependent Type II Diabetes (but was taking the maximum dosage of medication to keep her from being insulin dependent), high blood pressure, sleep apnea, PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome), significant lower-back and hip issues, as well as a host of other weight related health issues. Tammy was depending on various medications for all of these issues to keep her health in check. Currently her Diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and PCOS are all resolved. As well as the back and hip issues being substantially less than they were beforehand (As she has stated “Some conditions never go away, they just get manageably better!”).
As Tammy lost weight she found herself very involved in the weight loss surgery community. Particularly the LapBand patient’s journey, and started her own support group as well as creating an on-line support group. Tammy began mentoring other patients who were just starting to go through the same journey she had been on in the process of weight loss surgery. Her goal, aim, mission, and "heart" as you might put it, always revolved around educating, encouraging and mentoring others who come behind her. Tammy’s other goal is to help bring accountability to herself, and to others, when it comes to attaining and maintaining the weight loss that one works so hard to achieve.
Sometimes that goal involves reminding people that their weight loss surgery is simply “a tool” in order to help them succeed. They can sabotage, and perhaps are already sabotaging, their success at any time and life will possibly return to the place where they once lived - as it was before - unhappy, unhealthy, unfulfilled. Whatever was happening that incented them to have the surgery in the first place. The only difference between “I’m there in that dark place” now, is a greater level of remorse - because that person sees their walk as "I even failed at surgery". She can help.
Personally, Tammy’s been through changes in her own relationships - those that she thought were safe and secure, as well as those that Tammy knew from the start were already shaky. Tammy has gone through different stages of continued identity development - asking the question "Who am I now?" She left her job at a Fortune 5 company to become the Patient Liaison at a prominent weight loss surgery office in New York City and now walks with patients through some of these same transitional changes. She’s transitioned herself from having a "job" to creating a "career path" and currently is working on her Masters Degree in Social Work so that she can specialize in helping the obese, and formerly obese, through all of these stages of change. Tammy can relate. Because she’s been there and asked the same questions you are asking now...
So ask yourself…
